A small contingent of Marines belonging to the Fleet Antiterror Support Team (FAST) were deployed to the US Embassy in Liberia. Their mission was to defend it against possible attack from rebel or governmental forces. Soon after, peacekeeping troops from Nigeria and South Africa were deployed to secure Monrovia, Liberia's capital. Once they were in place, an estimated 200+ Marines from the 26th MEU landed to act as backup for the peacekeepers. A small number of Navy Special Warfare operators were also dispatched to secure Monrovia's port and to clear the waterways of dangerous objects so that humanitarian aid could begin flowing quickly.
