Maritime forces from Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, the United States and Uruguay landed on the beach in landing craft, air cushioned (LCAC) from the amphibious transport dock ship USS Mesa Verde (LPD 19) during the amphibious landing demonstration of UNITAS Gold. UNITAS Gold is the 50th iteration of the annual multinational maritime exercise known as UNITAS, which provides the opportunity to conduct and integrate joint and combined land, maritime, coast guard and air operations in a realistic training environment. Members of the Battle Group (BG) of Task Force 3-10 (TF 3-10) participated in exercise "Wolverine Defender," from 18–22 April 2010 in the Valcartier Garrison training areas.
The exercise deals with battle RCP (Road Clearing Package) and the establishment of a defensive position, followed by a rearward movement in contact. Many members of 12e Régiment Blindé du Canada (12 RBC), 1Battalion Royal 22e Régiment (1 R22R) and 5 Combat Engineer Regiment (5 CER) are taking part in the exercise, in addition to some Light Armoured Vehicles (LAV) and Leopard I assault tanks.

The purpose of this exercise was to cross the St. Lawrence River aboard thirty assault inflatable boats to attack a fictional enemy located at the eastern tip of Île-aux-Coudres. The simulation of fighting resulted in different scenarios ranging from ambushes to confrontation, punctuated by explosions.

Фотограф Reuters Финбарр О’Райли (на снимке ниже) снимает репортажи об американских и канадских солдатах в Афганистане с 2007 года. Он делится воспоминаниями о повседневной жизни солдат: “Чтобы твои репортажи публиковались, нужно найти способ освещать события войны, избегая излишнего сочувствия солдатам Запада и не придавая их поступкам искусственного героизма. Первый кадр в этой подборке в полной мере характеризует саму войну: несмотря на техническое превосходство, Коалиция увязла в постоянных схватках с неуловимым противником – партизанами, одетыми в халаты и сандалии и сражающимися устаревшим советским или самодельным оружием. Несимметричность конфликта просто разительна. Но Талибану удалось втянуть Коалицию в войну на истощение на родной земле. Наверное, самое эффективное оружие, которым располагают талибы, это время. Будут ли западные войска в Афганистане еще через десять лет?”
1. "23 октября 2007 года отряд канадских войск, с которыми был и я, попал в засаду талибов. Снаряд, взорвавшийся неподалеку, бросил старшего сержанта Пола Пайлота на землю. Сначала я потерял его из виду, но потом снова увидел: он полз, по земле, раненый и контуженный. Я снимал, чтобы отвлечься, подавить свой страх, и вместе с тем боясь упустить хороший кадр. Позже я узнал, что премьер-министр Канады позвонил командующему канадскими силами в Кандагаре, чтобы узнать, что произошло. На самом деле не произошло ничего особенного – бои здесь ведутся каждый день, только в тот день вместе с солдатами в засаду попал я, и сфотографировал этот бой. Эта ситуация прекрасно иллюстрирует то, как далеки от реальности люди, принимающие решения, и каким важным для принятия решений бывает личное присутствие.
2. Старший сержант Пол Пайлот (в центре) бежит к укрытию за несколько секунд до того, как в эту позицию попадет снаряд (см. предыдущее фото). Он получил контузию и несколько поверхностных ранений, но в целом отделался легко. 5. Фотографировать бой – своеобразный опыт. Кажется, что события замедляются, и все воспринимается очень четко. Может, это и страшно, но к экстремальным ситуациям быстро привыкаешь.
